This chant from Happy Valley Student Book 2, Unit 9, introduces animals we often find on farms, using the chunk It’s a. After Storytime, do the “Farm Chant” and then do it again with gestures. Then do the “It’s a Chicken Chant”. Finally, sing the song “Kinka and Pinka on the Farm” to introduce the sounds these animals make. This is a great unit to play charades with to review animal names, but also a chance for students to play Slap (karuta), with students asking “What says moo-moo?” so they can slap pictures of the animals. As students become confident, they can answer aloud with the animal names. If you have small animal figurines (you can also use flash cards), pretend that the animals have all run away. Hide them in the room and have your students search for them. Ask them what they can find, and when they discover one of the animals they can say its name in English and put it back on the farm.
