What is it? It’s a bicycle!

Ball Chant
Classroom Tip
This chant from Happy Valley Student Book 1, Unit 3, introduces commonly the used toys ball, car and bicycle. After Storytime, do this Ball Chant, then do it again with gestures. Next, do the It’s a Chant and then the It’s a Ball Chant.  This unit is a great opportunity to reinforce and encourage students to use the most empowering phrase for learning themselves: What is it? Last unit, you may have given them time to walk around the classroom asking What is it? about any item they are interested in. This unit, fill a bag with various age-appropriate items and set a timer. Students can choose any item and ask What is it? Teacher, answer. See if they naturally repeat, but if not, encourage them to try and say it. If they can ask about all the items before the timer runs out, everyone can high five. If not, play again. You could even have each student bring items from their homes for next week and repeat with ultimate personalization. Once students feel comfortable saying the object names, switch roles with the teacher asking What is it? and students answering in turn. Otherwise, check the free-to-download New Routines and Games Bank on www.happyvalley.tv and the free lesson plans for game ideas appropriate to the week you are teaching.
次はIt’s a ChantとIt’s a Ball Chantをしましょう。 生徒が袋から何かを選んでWhat is it?
At Home Tip

Use the Year 1 Unit 3 playlist and after watching the Storytime video, do this Ball Chant, then do it again with the gestures video. Next, do the It’s a Chant and then the It’s a Ball ChantWhat is it? is the most empowering phrase a child can have to learn on their own about things around them. Fill a bag with your child’s favorite things and set a timer. They can choose any item and ask What is it? Tell them the English and see if they naturally repeat. If not, encourage them to try and say it. If they can ask about all the items before the timer runs out, give them a high five. If not, play again. When your child can say the items, switch roles if they want to.
